Redundancy is key:

In this video, we’re taking a look at the Sound Devices 970 audio recorder with Dante & Madi i/O. With 144 inputs, made up of Dante, Madi, AES & Analog i/O, this half rack space unit really packs it it. You can record 64 tracks of 24-bit @ 48kHz or 32 tracks of 24-bit @ 96kHz.

It’s all about redundancy with the 970, dual power supplies, options to mount 4 hard drives along with proprietary ‘FileSafe & PowerSafe technology keeping things intact in the event of a failure. In the video, I pull the power and we see how the system shuts itself down without any loss of data.

While the cost of entry my seem high on these units, they are an excellent choice to rent if you only need one for occasional projects or specific work. Check out Gotham Sound for rental info (no affiliation, have just heard good things over the years).

If the budget doesn’t stretch to the 970, the MixPre series of recorders can be a great option for a lot of productions. Check out my video on the MixPre-6 for more info & to see it in action.

One of the most popular items purchased by viewers in the past year & easily the screwdriver I use the most around the shop, the PoziDriv PZ-1 is now available directly from Stanley instead of the Stanley-Facom import linked previously. This one is a few dollars cheaper and looks nearly identical.
