#84 – Sound Devices MixPre-6 First Look Review

It’s a fine line in audio production between getting the job done and going overboard preparing for every possible contingency. Personally, I’ve always loved using Sound Devices mixers and recorders in demanding settings where they are required, but for my average day to day use as a freelance audio tech, they’re honestly a bit more than I typically need.

Only a couple of years ago I sold my 442 in favor of a Tascam DR-70, simply because the 442 was being left at home too often due to it’s size and lack of built in recorder. I couldn’t justify buying the then new 663 at the time, as I don’t do enough bag work to justify the cost of such a pro recorder.

Overall, I have been very happy with the Tascam, but often find myself longing for a handful of additional options and a bit more flexibility. Higher quality recording options, being able to create a L/R mix and record that, having timecode inputs and being able to use the same uint as a computer interface are all currently on the top of my list for an upgrade.

When the opportunity came up to have a MixPre-6 on loan to check out for a few days, I couldn’t turn it down. I’ve only seen these in person briefly before, so this is a real first look at them from someone who is seriously considering spending their own money on something like this in the very near future.

I’ll be doing a longer in-depth review of these units as I get to know them better. I may buy one soon, but either way, I’m excited to use them more and get to know what they are capable of and share it with you here.

I get a lot of questions about the little GoPro Style camera I use for time-lapses occasionally. It’s a cheap generic 4k Action camera, right now this is the closest thing to the one I have. Most of the ones under $100 are a bit of a gamble, but can be handy for certain things.
