The best way to learn new gear or test new software.

I’ve been working with the full PreSonus StudioLive setup here at the shop: learning the system, testing, researching, and getting comfortable with the workflow. Between DAW Mode and the new ATOM Controller that arrived yesterday, there are a lot of moving parts to the system that already includes the NSB Stage Boxes, the EarMix Stations, AVB Switch, and of course the StudioLive mixer.

The easiest way for me to learn new gear is just to use it and see where I run into problems. A really handy tool to help in doing that is downloading free multitrack files to test with. There are a bunch of sites, blogs and resources online for you to find high quality .WAV or .FLAC files, organized and zipped into easy downloads. My favorite site to find interesting stuff to experiment with is the Telefunken website.

Having a huge library of professional multitrack recordings, along with accompanying mixes and videos is crazy. Most of the files are small enough that you can easily move them around and take them on the go. It’s really awesome that artists of all genres share their work like this and we should not take it for granted. You don’t get much better than free mixing practice using tracks from recognizable artists in unique recording sessions. These files can be used with any DAW, including free to download options like Reaper & Audacity.
