MOTU Ultralite USB-C Audio Interface

This is a quick teardown for the folks who want a hi-res look at what is going on inside the MOTU Ultralite Mk5 usb-c audio interface. We’ll see how things are laid out in this model and which components were chosen by MOTU for this version. We looked at the Ultralite mk4 on the channel previously, which is another very similar and popular interface. They also sell the Ultralite AVB as an option for AVB-TSN network audio users.

For anyone considering the mk5 who does not need the ADAT, S/PDIF and additional line-in and outputs, the new MOTU M6 is a very nice option you should consider. A future teardown will tell the whole story. However, the M6 uses the same ESS converters and is bus powered over USB-C. That alone might be the most popular feature request lately for new interfaces bring released. The price is also considerably less, though the unit offers four XLR inputs and mic preamplifiers.

Still, for professional use, the current Ultralite Mk5 is one of the best small interfaces right now (specifically designed) for Apple m1 systems. However, lots of folks are interested in it for use with Linux and Windows too. It’s a great portable option, and with DC coupled outputs is attractive for sending control voltages from a computer as well.
