If you’re recording, mixing or editing in a DAW, keeping your sample library, your projects and other large assets on a portable drive also allows you to work anywhere and take projects from one system to another seamlessly.

While modern computers are all outfitted with various flavors of USB 3, USB C or Thunderbolt these days, none of that matters much if the drives you are reading and writing to can’t take advantage of those speeds.
