Waves Tracks Dead

Last week was a big one in the DAW world, even if the news went by without much fanfare. Industry favorite tracking DAW ‘Waves Tracks Live’ was announced to be discontinuing development effectively immediately. While it will continue to work with all software it currently works with, there will be no more updates. In an unexpected parallel move, Waves announced they have qualified Reaper 6.0 from Reaper.fm for multitrack recording & playback on Waves SoundGrid Systems using the SoundGrid Driver.

Meanwhile, the folks at Behringer announced a free Music Tribe DAW in the works for early 2022. In Behringer’s usual style, the DAW promises the very best of everything, achieved by combining the best of all worlds, all for the empowering price of absolutely nothing.

They’re projecting 18 months until they have a working product to show, not much talk yet on how closely integrated their new Wing console will be with the software. Efforts look to be aimed at competing with free DAWs like Audacity, but with a bigger focus on music creation and production tools.

If you’ve found yourself in the market for a DAW or alternate tracking & capture software, the $60 Reaper.fm license is one of the best buys you can make. I’ve been using it for quite a few years in often extremely critical live recording situations with less stress than any of the other major DAW’s I’ve used otherwise.
