In a press release earlier today, PreSonus announced two new additions to their CDL Series of powered loudspeakers that have been available for a number of years. In their announcement, they report, “These models are the result of years of research and development and are a combination of the best attributes of point source and line array technology. The constant-directivity radiates a highly focused pattern with consistent SPL throughout the frequency response range, both on and off-axis. The result is clear, articulate speech intelligibility and natural music reproduction.”

PreSonus had CDL speakers on display and in use in their booths at each trade show I’ve attended and met with them at in the past. It is hard to get a good idea of what a system sounds like in that chaotic environment. It’s harder still when the presenters use already thin-sounding headset microphones, though both are very realistic use cases for real-world sound jobs. When I heard them in person, these systems struggled with projecting the sound forward effectively & were on the edge of feedback at times as a result.

That said, folks I’ve talked to who own and use these speakers regularly seem to like them. They get good marks for ease of use and reliability. They’re priced similarly to other popular powered boxes, and the system can grow if you need to add more cabinets in the future, though options for aiming fixed-angle arrays like this can be limited at best.
