Multi-Patter Condenser Microphone

The Lewitt MTP W950 handheld stage condenser microphone has some tricks up it’s sleeve. Though their cryptic naming convention doesn’t give much away, this handheld wired stage microphone can be taken apart to use with a wireless system. You can simply unscrew the capsule & stick it on any Shure compatible wireless system for incredible flexibility. That is not all though!

The W950 is also a multi-pattern condenser mic that can be switched between Cardioid and Super-Cardioid patterns. Under the microphone grill, you find a pattern switch, along with high pass filter and pad switches. Pretty cool stuff if you need that much flexibility, however the price may be out of reach for many stage microphone budgets.

Another hurdle to overcome is the weight and balance shift this microphone has when used wired. Obviously, an active microphone capsule for wireless use is going to be heavier than its wired counterpart. However, the larger handle and necessary electronics and batteries usually balance nicely against this extra weight. When you put that active capsule on a simple wired handle, the mic feels pretty front heavy as a result. Maybe this won’t be something you care about, but it is noticeable at first.

Hopefully they will release a guide to understanding their naming conventions in the future. Their MTP series seems to include all of their handheld microphones. The LCT series looks to include large and small diaphragm condensers that are not handheld. And their DTP series looks to be aimed at micing drum kits. The MTP series currently includes a 440 DM (dynamic) model and a 940 CM (condenser) model. No real clues yet what the MTP stands for. Can you guess?
